Here is my personal list of the top zombie movies created to this day. Let us know what you think below!
(Please don’t take too much time on the description, i’m really quite tired at the moment, so i’m probably not making a lot of sense throughout. Zombie fans should understand what i’m trying to say though)!
#10. Zombie Flesh Eaters 2 (1988)
A Fulci cheese classic! A much less serious movie than its predecessor ‘Zombi 2′, but still packs in the gritty gore and atmosphere. Zombie Flesh Eaters 2 is one to look out for to zombie fans and is definitely worth the watch. Cheesy horror fans keep an eye out for this ‘so bad it’s good’ zombie flick.
#9. Zombie Holocaust (1980)
One of the many video nasties released through the late 70′s to late 80′s, Zombie Holocaust is truly a graphicly violent movie. Expect poor characters and a poor story full of well crafted death scenes and you’ve got Zombie Holocaust. The story is basically a combination of Cannibal Holocaust and Zombi 2, with an Island full of cannibals and zombies. Ian McCulloch (Zombi 2) Also stars in this film again as the main protagonist.
#8. City of the Living Dead (1980)
Perhaps one of Fulci’s greatest movies, City of the Living Dead holds some of the most gruesome scenes of the 80′s, including the infamous head drilling scene. Again, the narrative is rather poor, with zombies being able to levitate and and teleport, but what’s poor is made up for throughout the film. City of the Living Dead deserves it’s place at number 8, and is now available on Blu-Ray courtesy of Arrow Video!
#7. Shaun of the Dead (2004)
I’m guessing most people are familiar with this British cult hit. Shaun of the Dead is a parody of all zombie movies throughout film history. Various references can be seen in the film towards George A. Romero, Lucio Fulci and their movies. With genuinely well crafted humour, Shaun of the Dead easily surpasses Zombieland (2009). The story centres around Shaun, a man who works in a mundane job and lives in a house with his housemates Ed and Pete. His family commitments are poor, and his relationship with his girlfriend is on the edge. After zombies begin to invade the streets of London, Shaun devises a plan to get everything back to normal – get to the Winchester Pub.
#6. Re-Animator (1985)
Re-Animator is a fun zombie flick. Herbert West, a sinister scientist holds the key to life. He is able to bring the dead back to life, via injecting his formula into the recently deceased. After moving into medical student Dan Cains flat, Dan learns of Herbert’s work and begrudgingly supplies him with bodies from the local morgue. However, things take a turn when the dead overrun and begin to attack. Re-animator has gained a cult status through it’s use of comedic, yet violent Gore. For those who haven’t seen this film, it’s definitely worth the watch.
#5. Day of the Dead (1985)
Romero’s third ‘of the Dead’ installment, shown through time frames in the film titles. Day of the Dead takes place years after Dawn, where humans have now been completely dominated by zombies. As the minority, they have been forced underground. A group of scientists and army men are taking refuge in an underground military bunker, where scientists are trying to domesticate the zombies. Dr. Logans prized work is Bub, a zombie which has been slightly domesticated to react with items such as phones and books. It becomes apparent that both Dr. Logan and Captain Rhodes are becoming insane. Miguel troubled personally later on opens the bunker lift, sending down a group of zombies to attack Captain Rhodes and his crew. (I am trying to explain without spoiling the film as such, so it might not make much sense). Anyway, this film is one of my favourite zombie movies. Special Effects man Tom Savini really shines through in this movie, with some amazing work. We can really see his improvement after Dawn of the Dead.
#4. Night of the Living Dead (1968)
The film that made zombies popular. Night of the Living Dead is the classic zombie movie. Here we see the story of Barbara, a frail woman who witnesses her brother being killed by a zombie in a remote cemetary. Fleeing from the scene, she takes refuge in a house where she meets fellow survivors Ben, Husband and Wife Harry and Helen Cooper, and couple Tom and Judy. The Coopers child is ill in the basement, and is rarely scene throughout. Harry and Ben are enemies and will do whatever it takes to disobey eachother, later on leading to serious zombie problems.
#3. Zombi 2 (1979)
Personally my favourite Fulci film, Zombi 2 is the unofficial sequel to Romero’s ‘Dawn of the Dead’. Zombi 2 fell into the Video Nasties list, being banned in numerous countries for it’s graphic on screen violence. It has also received a cult status in horror film history, with the Worm Eyed Zombie being a sort of Fulci ‘Trademark’. This flick has plenty of graphic violence, great special effects, great deaths and a fairly decent narrative. Oh, and some nudity for those interested! After finding her fathers boat empty in the rivers of New York, Anne Bowls (Tisa Farrow) vows to find her fathers whereabouts, with the aid of reporter Peter West (Ian McCulloch). After arriving to the Island of Matool, they find a lot more than what they were expecting.
#2. Dawn of the Dead (1978)
The second installment of the ‘of the Dead’ series, and the most favourtised. Dawn of the Dead is set years after Night of the Living Dead and shows how the epidemic has risen greatly, to the point of humans being outnumbered. Dawn of the Dead tells the story of 4 survivors who take refuge in a shopping mall. An influence of many zombie movies including the Italian Zombie Movie Craze (Zombi 2, Zombi 3, Zombie Holocaust), Dawn of the Dead is a classic worth owning on blu-ray. (The blu-ray quality is amazing for this one).
#1. Braindead (1992)
Which brings us to the best zombie movie of all time, Braindead. Directed by Peter Jackson, this cult classic is hailed as the Goriest movie of all time (and isn’t far off). The story starts off with the legend of the Rat-Monkey, and how it’s bite (aka ‘The Bite’) causes it’s victim to turn into flesh eating zombies. Zoo catcher Stewart is bitten by the Rat-Monkey upon capturing, and then chopped apart by colleagues to prevent him turning. The Rat-Monkey is then shipped to Wellington Zoo, New Zealand. Lionel lives with his mother, a woman obsessed with controlling her child 100%. After Lionel meets the shopgirl Paquita, Mum get’s jealous and begins to spy on the couple. They visit Wellington Zoo, where Mum is bitten after hiding against the Rat Monkey’s cage. After a day of rapid deterioration, Mum turns into a zombie, killing the nurse. Lionel hides them both in the cellar, but how long will the door hold them from infecting the whole town? For those who haven’t seen this movie, I have three simple words – ‘Watch this film’. You will not regret it. Braindead will have you lauging, gagging and squeaming throughout.
